Choosing the Flooring
Boaz introduced us to our flooring installers, Daniel and his two brothers. I enjoyed talking with them because they reminded me of my family.
Although we did not desire it, we thought we could settle for carpet or laminate wooden flooring in the upper floor of the home to save costs. However, we really had our hearts set on white oak flooring. We had spent time admiring the white oak flooring in our favorite coffee shop, Summer Moon, in Abilene, Texas. We had made a habit of stopping there for a cold brew coffee while traveling. We loved the design in Summer Moon, with its shades of green on the walls, a red brick accent wall, and the white oak flooring.
White oak is a very hard wood, has a lot of character through its knotty appearance, and has a rustic look to it. Daniel did not agree that using carpeting or laminate would save us much money, and he recommended we use the white oak flooring throughout the whole house. Naturally, it was what we preferred and thought the white oak flooring would look phenomenal throughout the whole house.
After choosing the white oak flooring, we were requested to decide upon a stain color. Hannah, Scott, and I met Daniel at Mesquite Street one afternoon, and he brought some wood stain samples. Stains can be used to change the wood to a darker color as well as adjust undertones in the wood such as yellow or orange hues. After analyzing the stain colors, Scott and Hannah and I decided we loved white oak too much and decided to leave the wood as natural as possible by using only clear polyurethane on them, which essentially looks like water had been splashed evenly onto the wood. The floors turned out beautiful and are one of our favorite elements about the house!
